Prince-Bishop's Palace Münster: residence of science

Münster's Prince-Bishop's Palace is a must-see on any tour of the city. Due to its central location, the iconic building is recommended as a starting point for a stroll through the old town, where numerous other sights and landmarks of the city await you.

Over a construction period of 20 years, the magnificent baroque building was originally built as the residence of Prince-Bishop Maximilian Friedrich von Königsegg-Rothenfels, who died three years before its completion. The three-winged complex extends over 91 meters and is characterized by its elegant design of red brick and light sandstone and the rich figural decoration on the façades.

Severely damaged by air raids during the Second World War in 1945, the exterior was restored according to old plans until 1953. The palace subsequently became a symbol of science and is both the administrative seat and symbol of the University of Münster. The university's central and largest lecture hall building is also located on Schlossplatz.

However, non-academic events also make the Schlossplatz a popular meeting place throughout the year, such as the equestrian event “Turnier der Sieger” or the “Send” fair, which takes place three times a year.
